Do you know of any good B&B's in the area?

What was your final decision? Nice or Cannes and what hotel?
As for the hotels, I never very mucxh liked the Negresco. First it was way to "stuffy" The doorman even in July and August did have to wear that humongous fur coat with the giant fur hat. He must have had eithe an aiconditioner built in, or would have been comforable even on Antartica. Now the quality is gone down, but they put up the same airs. I allways liked the Westminster Concord (I do hope they maintain their level (4****). They also had a very good restairant during th summer season, regretfully they just hired their Chefs for the summer season, so there was a change year to year, hut grenerally it was very good. As for the price it was very reasonable, equalt to a better 3*** hotel in Paris. I did book generally at least 2-3 month ahead, so we could get a front view (beachfront) room. The side view rooms looked at the Massena Park and the Negresco.

Le Meridien in Nice has a nice roof-top swimming pool, and the rooms at the front have great views of the Mediterranean and are prettily decorated in yellows and blues. The other hotel in Nice that we like very much is the Lapérouse, right at the end of the Promenade des Anglais as it curves around to the port.
The Negreso in NICE has a lovely beach club. However, the hotel isn't want it used to be. Some of the rooms in this historic landmark have become downright seedy. You will be paying 5* prices and won't necessarily receive 5* service. SAD but true!
Yes, it is a hard decision to be made! but all kidding apart there are significant differences between the two places. Now the fact that you are going in July-August, would indicate to me, that ane of the intersts you have is going to be going to the beach, these months are in fact the best for enjoying the beaches. Now there is a significant difference between the beaches of Nice and Cannes. It is very simple: The beaches on Cannes are sand beaches, while the beaches of Nice are pebble beaches. (large pebbles, let us say 1/2" to 2" bebbles). This is a significant difference, and this is one of the main reasons I prfer Nice. I am not crazy about sandy beaches, where the fine sand gets into everything, including anything you plan to eat or dirnk. Pebbles of that side do not stick to you or anything. On the other hand, it does make walking barefoot sort of a chalenge. On the paying beaches (every other beach is a paying or private beach, and every other one is a free beach. The only facilities at the free feaches are is a shower and toilet favilities. The "paying beaches" do have all facilites, from wooden walk ways, dech chairs umbrellas, food and drink facilities. etc, etc. Naturally you can walk over from the free to a paying beach, etc. Bpth of them do have nice hotels, especially along the beach front. Anything else?

But I was wondering if Nice might be better, or maybe some other place like St. Tropez or Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. We'll have a car and will be using the hotel as a place to return to after a long day sightseeing, etc. Your input is greatly appreciated!
If you have a car, I would stay away from Nice and Cannes. Both are congested and EVERYTHING costs a fortune -- coming and going. Ditto for St. Tropez and Cap Ferrat. There are so many wonderful hotels in that part of the world. I try never to go to the cities you've mentioned during July and/or September!
It's tough to say which.....they offer different things. Having a car, Cannes is great for going to spots nearby...Mougins,Grasse and spots on the water. And the area near the old town with tons of out door restaurants...just lovely. Looking at the menus is a great activity.
Nice offers wonderful museums..Chagall, Matisse etc. But Cannes is much prettier and my favorite.
Icarpi, I think you have your Hotel or city Mixed up. The Negreco, brobably the best or most famous and most posh and most expensive Hotel on the Cote d'Azur is not in Cannes but in Nice.
The beaches in the two cities are not identical: The beaches in Cannes are sand beaches, the beaches in Nice are gravel beaches. (when I say Gravel I am not talking about fine (1/4"?) gravel but 1"-2" (even some 3" gravel. It is a bir harder to walkon), but at the paying beaches thay have wooden walk boards layed-out, so it is not bad. In canne the fine sand is nice to walk on, however, whe you get sand all over you and it dries on you that is not too convenient So it comes out the same. Personally I prefer Nice, and was there maybe 10-12 times. In Cannes there are more business meetings, etc. Which helps to keep the prices also up.

I'd love any suggestions and opinions on this topic.
We have rented a villa in Les Menerbes for two weeks in September. After the first week, the men must leave (they can't stay away from the offices!) and we will be putting them on the plane in Nice. So we're going to spend the weekend on the Cote d'Azur, and I can't decide which would be a better place to stay. Currently, we have reservations at the Negresco in Cannes, because the guys certainly don't want to miss the topless beaches. But I was wondering if Nice might be better, or maybe some other place like St. Tropez or Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
