Cost of coffee.

The worst and by ways most expensive coffee (espresso that was) we had in Paris was at the lobby of the recently opened very chic Park Hyatt Hotel on Rue de la Paix. It's located next to the Hotel Mansart which BP Jean likes a lot (... next to the Madison wink.gif).

7 Euro and not even a tiny chocolate to go with it! mad.gif

But the lobby is great for a rest, to read the latest papers, to use other facilities...
Just don't order a coffee! It sucks, at least this is what we thought.
Unfortunately enough, we thought it was too early for a glass of champagne. huh.gif
We had that on a different day at the bar of the Four Seasons George V. 20 Euro, but worth it with delicious green and black olives and salted almonds. wub.gif

What is the average cost of coffee, sitting down in a cafe, in the centre of Paris.
Many thanks Annmarie.

Well, an expresso will likely run E1.50 to 2.00 in the "center" areas such as the 6th or out in the 16th. A "cafe creme" (more like USA-style and size) will run E3-4.

But usually if I go into a joint mostly to use the restroom, it's a place that charges E1 for a "un express".
Annmarie, you got your response to the price of the café. I like to comment on the other word you ysed: "Center of Paris" Paris, and most larger European cities are not built like here in the US. We have a "downtown area" and that is the "center of the city. All theathers are there, financial institutions, etc. Paris consists of 20 distrists. districts 1 though 9 a are "centrally located" on the map. this includes the financial and business district, Most theathere are in these 9 districts, but also ,uch of the entertainment is there, but they are separate from each other. For exa,ple the first contains most of the central branches of the financial institution, next to the Seine. On the other hand the 6th, also very centrally located next to the other side of of the Seine, is a much mor relaxed area, with lots of large and little cafes, little hotels, that house much of the visitors. It is a different athmosphere. You really have to experience it, to understand it.

The tip is included. It is the practice, especially in cafés and when one has lingered, to leave some of the very small change that is returned on the tray.

Do you have to tip for a cup of coffee?
We stopped for coffee (in order to use a restroom!) at a café across from Notre-Dame cathedral; an espresso was 3.5€, while a plain old cup of "American" coffee was 5€. We were sitting inside; outside was more expensive. And we had a very slow waiter to boot.
Bonjour Annmarie and Welcome to BP!
It depends a lot on the exact location. The more chic, the more expensive!
If you mean a café (small Italian espresso), prices will range from about 2 to 5 Euro. If you mean a café au lait (larger cup with hot milk), prices can be astronomic. Café Marly at the Louvre charged some 6 E a couple of years ago.

I am sure Paris residents such as Karen, Phyllis, Sam, etc. will be able to give you more detailled info. wink.gif

BTW, where has ParisIan gone? wacko.gif
