Linda,

What is the Relais et Château hotel in Beaune?
Regarding restaurants please post your questions here.

There's already a LOT of information in the restaurant section.

and yes -- the French are lovely if you are nice to them!
I would like to thank all of you for your replies. We are seriously thinking about splitting our trip between Paris and Burgundy after the responses. I wouldn't mind restaurant suggestions as well. TI will be emailing Linda for more info. Thanks again,

We go to Beaune every year. It's about a 3 hour drive from the center of Paris so a day trip wouldn't work. If you're on a tight budget, it would probably be cheaper to take the train to Beaune or Dijon and rent a car there. Be sure to book your car before you go as the rates are much cheaper from the states. Check out the Hospice de Beaune and you'll get a lot of info on wine tours, cave tastings, etc. If you like, I can put you in touch with some people to prearrange that. Email me at tmflint1@bellsouth.net. (No, I'm not a travel agent...I just have some friends in the business wub.gif

There's a very nice Relais & Chateaux in Beaune that would be family friendly. In fact, Beaune is a very family oriented town and the people are wonderful. Try to be there for the Saturday morning market; it's one of my favorites.

Being a chef, I'm sure you've already scoped out the good restaurants but I'd be happy to give you some of our favorites.
Chef amaury,

I agree that the TGV is a good option. You can look at schedules and fares to both Dijon and Beaune at http://www.raileurope.com. It only takes about an hour and a half to get to Dijon from Paris on the TGV.

A car would give you more freedom to travel around the area, though. If you take the train, one option would be to rent a car at the station in Dijon. You can look at rates and make a booking through Bonjour Paris by going to Auto Europe through the Marketplace. If you can sqeeze in an overnight, I don't think you'll regret it.

It's beautiful country and I think you'll find the people very welcoming.

Have a wonderful trip and please post a trip report for us when you return.
People in Burgundy are quite friendly, and you will have a wonderful time trying the Burgundian cuisine and wines. However, you won't be able to experience much in just a day trip from Paris. But if that's all you can squeeze out, Í'd suggest taking the TGV to Dijon and then another train to Beaune, which is more or less in the center of the major wine region. There are a number of good tasting rooms to visit within the town itself; so need to travel farther. It goes without saying that there are also good restaurants!

I don't know that you'd actually need a wine tour. Many of the small Burgundian vintners don't give the kind of tours we're used to here (in the Napa Valley, for example), and most require advance reservations. Getting to the wineries would be difficult without a car; with one you can drive down the main "wine road" and visit the primary wine villages, such as Savigny-les-Beaune, Meursault, Montrachet, and others that are making me salivate. I'd especially recommend a visit to the Château de Meursault's tasting room.

You could check on lodgings by Googling on "Beaune hotels" or "Beaune B&Bs." We haven't stayed in the town recently; so I don't have one to recommend.

Good luck, and enjoy your time in Burgundy.
Hi, Can anyone help me with some advice. I will be traveling with my wife and two boys to Paris on the week of March 22nd. We will be spending most of our time in Paris. We are thinking about taking a day trip or maybe overnight to wine country in Burgundy. I am a chef at my very own small restaurant in the western suburbs of Chicago. I have been to France once sixteen years ago with my wife on our honeymoon. I would like this experience to be more food and wine oriented. Can anyone help me with the best way possible to get their from Paris? How long will it take? Is a car, train or bus recommended? What is more cost effective. Are they friendly in that part of the country? Are they receptive to americans? Are their nice wine tours? How about lodging for a family of four overnight? Please help?
