Jean, do you know which street it's on between St. Germain and the Seine?

I am not Jean .... but I think Paul is located on the corner of Rue du Buci.

My husband says that Paul's has the absolute best hot chocolate in the city (but of course there are still places he hasn't tried).

My vote goes to the croissants at Boulangerie Paul, the one between the Bvd. St-Germain and the Seine.

I love their nut bread!

Is he becoming the Ducasse of the bread industry?

If he is, I hope he leaves the original on the rue Monge alone. It is consistently good or better, and the staff there and at his Epicerie are always the same.

Why do you suppose Kayser wasn't in the top 7? They have some of the best I've ever tasted. . . wub.gif

Did you know that they have a shop in Tokyo?

Kaiser is opening shops EVERYWHERE. He's bought an apartment in NYC and plans to spread throughout the US.

Perhaps that may contribute to ALL of his bakeries not being consistent.

He has a NEW book in the works at this VERY moment.

Is he becoming the Ducasse of the bread industry?

Eric Kayser opened 2 shops here in Los Angeles as well called Breadbar which I haven't yet gone to but read really bad reviews about the service. Fortunately, bad service never thwarts me and I should be trudging along to this place to check if their products are as good as and as varied as his shops in Paris.

As for Poilâne in the list... aaahhh... how I love their bread and still have a stash of Punitions from my last trip to Paris.
Well, everybody likes Eric Kayser (you know that a cookbook of his tartes--savory and sweet--was recently published?). He came 15th, after the seven-way tie for places 8 through 14. Here he is, with the intervening boulangeries:

Tied for 8-14:
--. Julien, 75 rue Saint-Honoré, 1er
--. Delmontel, 39 rue des Martyrs, 9e
--. La Grande Épicerie (Au Bon Marché), 38 rue de Sèvres, 7e
--. A. Poilâne, 8 rue du Cherche-Midi, 6e
--. M. de la Vierge, 82 rue Daguerre, 14e
--. Secco, 20 rue Jean-Nicot, 7e
--. Nicolle, 11 av. Philippe-Auguste, 11e
15. Kayser, 10 rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie, 6e

There's now an Eric Kaiser patisserie in the 16th, near the corner of Avenue Poincare and rue Lauriston, not far from Trocadero. The service is competely nuts, but the yummy bread and pastries will make you forget about it.

When in Paris and I crave for Eric Kayser's financiers and breads I just go to the Galeries Lafayette Gourmet. No line! smile.gif

I'll vote for Kaiser .....

Others -- please cast your votes!

Last week's Figaroscope printed the results of this year's Best Croissants in Paris survey. The top seven finishers:

1. Pierre Hermé, 72 rue Bonaparte, 6e (my comment: hardly seems fair, given that he's the most famous patissier in Paris)
2. Triomphe, 95 rue d'Avron, 20e
3. L. Duchêne, 2 rue Wurtz, 13e
4. Mulot, 76 rue de Seine, 6e
5. Lenôtre, 36, av. de La Motte-Picquet, 7e
tied 6-7. Le Boulanger de Monge, 123 rue Monge, 5e
tied 6-7. Vandermeersch, 278 av, Daumesnil, 12e

Then there was a seven-way tie for places 8-14.

Marc

That's a lot of croissants to try on the next trip! biggrin.gif

You would literally have to try all boulangeries in Paris to know where one gets the best croissants.

...and you would kill yourself, but at least you'd die with a big smile on your face!

BP Chuck

P.S. This remarrk was not very fair (but true) as I also like good Croissants, (as long as they are without chocolat!)
Jean, you may also add: and get fat...

BP Chuck
I know a number of chocolateens in our neighborhood. That's probably why they have skin problems. wink.gif

Ah oui, now I see and you must be right about the spelling, Jean.
Please do let us know what they compare to. biggrin.gif

Are those chocolatines the ones with some icing sugar on the top?

Ok guys... lol... so after some research I found that there are TWO names for what I am talking about...

1. chocolateen
2. Pain au chocolat.

So there are the same thing its just our store calls them something different amongst many other boulangeries that I have went to.

hope i helped clear things up wub.gif
Ashley, I will try one when I am there tongue.gif I'll report back as to what we thought of the chocolatines. smile.gif
