I just finished Talk to the Snail by Stephen Clarke, author of A Year in the Merde. I was somewhat skepticle because I didn't like A Year in the Merde, but I enjoyed this one. If you can cut through the cynicism, it's an interesting peek into the French mind. Some of his anecdotes are amusing, like the story about the poor (French) woman just wanting to buy a bottle of milk, but forgetting to say the obligatory "bonjour" to the shop owner.
I'm almost finished with Provence A - Z by Peter Mayle. I enjoy his writing style and while I prefer some of his other books, this is worth a read.
