Thanks Zen.

The titre de propriété may not be issued yet. The seller cannot appeal the sale anymore, but he is asking the court to grant him rent for the last 7 years. So the sale will not be final until this final appeal is rejected.

But now I know what to ask my lawyer for.

Can I check with the Marie to see who own this flat and 2 adjacent flats? I speak and write enough French to ask them for whatt I want. I've heard the term Marie before but I'm not clear what it is.

So who are they and how do I contact them?
hi IrishBeast,

In France, the proof of ownership is the "titre de propriété". Generaly It is sent by the notary between 3 months and 1 years following the sale.

And to reply to your question there is a registry that lists who owns what, the "mairies" know that.

bye.

Thanks St Germaine. I have to do this title search trough a notary or can I contact the registry myself?

What are the French words for Registry, and title deeds?
How much would a notary charge for this? I'm actually interested in finding the owners of some adjacent rooms as well, so it might be an opportunity to kill 2 birds.

Do you know a good notary who speaks English, and can deal by Email?
There is a 'registry" and there are "title deeds." You should ask a notaire to do a title search on your property and the report from the search should produce the documents you need to prove ownership.
I need some information on owning property in France, and hope this is the right forum. Since 1998 I’ve been acquiring an apartment in St Michel. BTW I’m Irish living in Munich. An ex-friend has been liasing with my lawyer, and renting the place out. For various reasons I want to take more direct control myself.

I’ve been given to understand that the acte de vente is my proof of ownership? In my case there is no act de vente, because the court ended up ordering the owner to honour our promesse de vente, and (at least I’m told) this court order replaces the acte de vente.

I want to know what papers to ask my lawyer to prove I do own the apartment. Are there formal title deeds instead/in addition? Also is there a registry that lists who owns what? Otherwise how can you be sure somebody has not sold again when he waves an acte de vente at you?
