Basilique du Sacré Coeur

Make sure to watch your handbags and wallets while you head to the top of the Butte de Montmartre to stand in front of the magnificent Basilique du Sacré Coeur.  Once you’ve made it to the top of the butte, at the top of the basilica's stairs, turn around and gasp at one of the most splendid views of Paris -- but don't stop there!  Head to the top of the dome for one of your best photo-ops -- complete with the Eiffel Tower in the view. Beware, there are a lot of people (so, go early!) and it’s a long way up—over two hundred spiraling steps, actually. If you’re not up for the hilly Butte walk, take the funiculaire tram (which is free if you’ve bought a day pass on the RATP -- or a simple metro ticket). Whether you walk up or get a ride, the view is stunning, but perhaps the most spectacular view of the church is the one you catch a glimpse of while getting lost in the confusing, yet charming streets behind.

Stories about Basilique du Sacré Coeur

  • At the very top: Sacré Coeur and Montmartre

    By Anne Benveniste
A vision of white crowning Paris…that’s how I’d describe the Sacré Coeur, a 19th century church that sits atop the only perceptible hill in the city.  In the quaint neighborhood of Montmartre – think Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain – this classic tourist destination is certainly worth a lunchtime visit.

I like to get off at the Anvers Métro stop (line 2), a straight shot from the Champs Elysées.  Walk up the hill towards the Sacré Coeur – only use one of your metro tickets on the funicular if you must, since the steps are gradual and the view just keeps getting better with the ascent.  At the top, with the church on your back, you have a fantastic view of Paris.  There is a photograph of the view that labels the famous landmarks – try and find all the places you’ve gone and things you’ve seen!  Unfortunately the western part of the city is blocked by trees – alas, no Eiffel Tower or Arc-de-Triumph, but you can still admire the majesty of the city.
